[Inside AdSense] Google Apps welcomes AdSense

Google Apps is Google's suite of cloud-based messaging and collaboration apps used by over 30 million users in small and large businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, and non-profit organizations around the world. Apps includes products such as Gmail, calendar, documents, spreadsheets and more, specifically optimized for use in organizations.

We recently launched an improvement to Google Apps that made dozens of Google services, including AdSense, available to Apps users for the first time. Before this improvement, Google Apps users had to create a separate account to sign in to AdSense; now, Apps users can access their cloud-based productivity applications along with AdSense using the same account.

For those of you who also have a Google Apps account, we're in the process of finalizing the infrastructure that will allow you to seamlessly transition your existing AdSense account and data over to your Google Apps account. For new users, if your Apps systems administrator has enabled AdSense, you can begin using this services with your existing Apps account at google.com/adsense.

If you haven't started using Google Apps yet to manage collaboration for your business, learn more about how to lower IT costs and improve productivity at google.com/apps.

For more details, read the complete post on the Google Enterprise blog and follow all the updates on other newly available services for Google Apps users.

[Inside AdSense] General Category Blocking extended

Following up on our announcement that we've been beta-testing a new category blocking feature, we're delighted to release the feature to all publishers in English-speaking countries. General category blocking is an important update to the new AdSense interface that offers you more controls over the ads that appear on your website. It helps you scalably prevent competitors' ads and ads that you might not find suitable for your audience from appearing on your site. With this new control, you can opt out of receiving ads from across 170 specific categories, including finance, travel, job, and automotive.

We show the percentage of total revenue and total impressions for each category to give you insight into the categories of ads that appear on your site and the relative spend in those categories. Keep in mind that blocking categories may have a negative impact on your potential revenue so it's important to review the % of total revenue and total impressions carefully before deciding to block a certain category.

This feature is now available to all publishers in English-speaking countries in the new AdSense interface. General category blocking will initially apply only to ads in English, regardless of the language of the site. We are working on expanding it to other languages in the future.

We hope this feature will address the feedback we've heard from many publishers who want a way to quickly and easily control the ads appearing on their site.

Please leave us comments on how you find the feature.

[Inside AdSense] ‘Tis the season for placement targeting: Don’t forget to opt...

We'd like to share a final holiday reminder about our placement targeting series and summarize the tips we've shared over the past few weeks.

1. Make sections of your site available to be targeted directly by AdWords advertisers with ad placements. These easy-to-implement changes will make your website and channels more marketable to advertisers, which in turn will increase your overall earning potential.

2. Market your website with DoubleClick Ad Planner so advertisers can easily locate sites like yours that match their target audiences.

3. Optimize your ad units by enabling both text and image ads, using top-performing ad unit sizes, and placing ads 'above the fold' so that they're immediately visible to your users.

We hope you enjoyed our placement targeting series. Check out the Help Center or watch the video below to learn more.

Happy Holidays!

[Inside AdSense] Meet the international AdSense team

AdSense is an international product. We're available in more than 200 countries and more than 36 different languages. Working with publishers and Googlers from around the globe is one or our favorite things about being on the AdSense team, and we're proud to welcome readers from all over the world.

After we posted the Behind the Scenes videos in the U.S., many of our international publishers wrote to us saying they would also like to meet their local AdSense teams. So, after countless hours in the production studio, here they are!

Meet the people who help publishers earn more revenue in Australia, Poland, Netherlands, Brazil, Germany, Japan, China, France, South Africa, and the Spanish-speaking world here, or watch the videos below.

If you're a publisher from any of these markets, feel free to comment and say hi. Your local AdSense team will be excited to hear from you!

[Inside AdSense] Improve your AdSense implementation for the holidays

The holidays are drawing near. As advertisers try to reach more potential customers, now is the best time to increase ad coverage on the pages of your site.

We want to work with you to help optimize your AdSense implementation, and have provided our top optimization tips below. If you're interested in trying out some of these suggestions, please sign up before December 15th, 2010. An AdSense optimization specialist will contact you by email or phone to implement the tips you want to try, and we may feature some of you on our Inside AdSense blog!

First, we want to remind you that you're allowed to put three standard AdSense for content ad units, three link units, and two AdSense for search boxes on each page of your site.

Choose the right ad units for your pages.
As a general rule of thumb, wider ad units perform better because they:
  • Are easier for users to read and interact with
  • Allow more ads to be displayed within a unit
  • Are preferred by advertisers designing image or video ads
Also, remember to opt in to display text and image ads, as this increases the pool of advertisers competing to appear on your site.

Improve your AdSense implementation by increasing ad coverage on your site.
  • Put ads on pages that don't currently have any, as this increases the chances of monetizing your site's traffic. This is especially true for the high traffic areas of your site.
  • Our data shows that placing ads within the page content or article text, or near the navigational areas of your site, can strongly increase ad performance, since it gives your users relevant ads alongside the great content that they're used to.
  • Use link units to monetize the smaller areas on your site.
  • Above all: the most effective change you can make is to put at least one ad unit above the fold -- the section of the page users see without scrolling down.
Don't forget to sign up! We'll then check your site and get back to you.

We look forward to seeing your implementations!

[Inside AdSense] AdSense for domains makes it easier to setup your domains

A common request we've received from publishers using AdSense for domains is to make it easier to park your currently unused/undeveloped domains with Google. We've listened to your feedback, and are now pleased to announce that we've simplified the process of setting up AdSense for domains.

As of today, to get your domain setup with AdSense for domains, you can simply delegate your domains' nameserver to Google's DNS nameserver. This is typically a single step with your registrar, and simpler than the old method of changing A records and creating CNAME records. You can still use the old method if you prefer, and domains that are already set up will continue to work.

To get started, review our instructions for delegating your nameserver to use Google's DNS nameserver in our Help Center.

If you own any domains that you haven't yet had a chance to develop, now is a great time to sign up for AdSense for domains.

Based on your feedback, we've worked hard to give you more control over the ads on your site by improving the ad blocking options and making them easier to use. You can now block ads by advertiser URL, block categories of ads from showing on your site, and search and review placement-targeted ads by ad type, keyword, URL, or ad network to easily find, approve, or block ads in the ad review center. The video below provides an overview of these features:

[Inside AdSense] Getting to know you at AdSense in Your City: Seattle

Last week, three other AdSensers and I went up to Seattle for our sixth AdSense in Your City event. After visiting Mountain View, Santa Monica, Chicago, New York, and Boston over the summer, we didn't want our publishers in the Pacific Northwest to feel left out!

Greeted with beautiful weather on Wednesday, we spent the day at a coffee shop meeting those of you who were free to drop in for a one-on-one consultation. Over pastries and cappuccinos, we chatted with publishers about ways they can earn more with AdSense, learning their stories and providing optimization tips. Everyone we met was incredibly friendly, sharing how AdSense has allowed their business to grow and offering suggestions to help us make the most of our time in Seattle. After checking out the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, we headed back to Kirkland to gear up for another day of optimizations.

We were thrilled to have publishers from Washington, Oregon, and Canada join us on Thursday for the event at our Kirkland office. Splitting up the group for optimizations, half consulted with us on their sites, while the others networked with each other, swapping stories about their own AdSense experiences and sharing tips and tricks. It was a great way for everyone (including us!) to learn something new and make some great connections.

We hope to hold more AdSense in Your City events in the coming months so we can continue to meet more of you in your hometowns. Want AdSense to come to your city? Leave us a comment to tell us where you are!

[Inside AdSense] Spot a problem? Check the Known Issues page

We work hard to make sure that AdSense is always up and running smoothly. Even so, there can be slight issues, and when those happen, we try to resolve them as quickly as possible. To keep you informed about any issues our engineers are tackling, and provide you with workarounds so you can continue to effectively manage your account, we want to remind you about the Known Issues page.

We update this page regularly to keep you posted about our progress as we work toward a resolution. We also record recently resolved issues so you can check if something you've experienced in the past has been fixed.

In fact, we now have two Known Issues pages, one for the old interface and one for the new interface. This way, you'll know if an issue pertains to the interface you're using.

If you don't see your issue listed, join the discussion in the AdSense Forum to see if other publishers are experiencing the same thing. We monitor your feedback in the forum to help identify issues, so if multiple publishers are discussing a similar concern, we'll be sure to escalate it to our engineers immediately and post any details and workarounds to the Known Issues page as soon as possible. You can also report an issue about the new interface to our product teams directly from the interface by clicking the 'Report Issue' link available on the top of every page.

Thanks for staying on top of your account! We'll do our best to keep everything working as smoothly as possible.

In addition, your ad targeting won't be affected.

We've converted the maintenance start time for a few cities around the world:

London - 6pm Saturday
Alexandria - 8pm Saturday
Hyderabad - 11:30pm Saturday
Jakarta - 1am Sunday
Perth - 2am Sunday

To learn more about what goes on during these maintenance periods, check out this Inside AdSense post.

[Inside AdSense] Introducing the new AdSense interface, now available globally

Last November we announced that we were starting to test a new interface with a limited group of publishers. Since then, we've been focused on adding new features and incorporating feedback from our testers. Today, we're excited to announce that we've begun rolling out the new AdSense interface to all publishers globally. Within the next few weeks, you should see a "Try the new AdSense interface" link appear in the upper corner of your account. Clicking the link will bring you to the new interface.

Built based on feedback we've heard from you, our publishers, the new interface is full of features designed to help you make more money with AdSense. We want to thank you for all the input you've given us, and show you some of the ways it's reflected in the new interface.

You've told us that data that helps you better understand your performance is critical to growing your revenue, so we've made sure that the new interface gives you more insights.
You can now run even more detailed performance reports by ad type, ad size, ad unit, targeting type, and bid type for total earnings and other metrics, over custom date ranges. You'll also find graphs of your data on the new Performance reports tab. You can quickly view impressions, clicks, and earnings all in one graph, compare text ad performance to image ad performance, compare date ranges, and easily analyze data to recognize trends.

You've continued to let us know that protecting your brand by having control over the ads that run on your site is extremely important, so we've improved our ad controls and made them easier to use.
All ad controls are now in one place, on the Allow and block ads tab. Here, you'll be able to filter ads from specific advertisers, categories, and ad networks. In addition, you'll notice that we've updated the ad review center to make it easier to review and manage ads that have been placement-targeted to your sites. You can now search for ads in the ad review center by ad type, keyword, URL, or ad network, and choose to allow or block them.

You've shared with us the need to manage your account more efficiently, so we've redesigned the interface to help you complete tasks quickly and easily.

The new interface allows you to quickly see your earnings and payment information, find relevant features, and make changes to your account. It also brings relevant help and other resources, like videos and blog posts, right into the interface, so you can get the information you need without leaving your account.

[Inside AdWords] Measure the phone calls you get from AdWords

What if you found out that your AdWords campaigns were bringing you more customers than you realized?

Zac Stafford, Senior Search Strategist at Nina Hale Search Marketing in Minneapolis, MN, recently discovered that this was true for his client, modern furniture retailer Room & Board. Stafford saw some encouraging results as an early beta tester of AdWords call metrics, a new feature that automatically includes a unique phone number in your ads to measure the calls that you receive from AdWords.

"By cross-checking our call metrics reports with our sales records, we saw that half the people who called the toll free number in our ad purchased online but the other half purchased in a store. Before using call metrics, we determined our ROI just by looking at the online sales numbers. Now we have proof that online search ad campaigns drive in-store purchases."

Today we're announcing that AdWords call metrics is available for more advertisers, making it easier than ever to measure the phone calls that AdWords generates for your business. Using the technology behind Google Voice, call metrics assigns your campaign a unique phone number which is automatically inserted into your ad on both desktop and high-end mobile devices, where the number is clickable.

Call metrics ad at the top of the search results:

Call metrics at the right of the search results:

Call metrics ad on a high-end mobile device:

When a user calls the number in your ad, the call is automatically routed to your business, and AdWords notes that this call took place. Then, when you look at your AdWords reports, you'll see the number of calls generated by each campaign, call duration, and in the near future, caller area code. You'll still only pay for clicks on your ads, but we intend to charge for call metrics in the future.

Once you know where your calls are coming from, you can refine your marketing strategy to make sure you're getting the most out of your ads. For example, you could test different ad text variations to see which results in the most calls or reallocate budget to campaigns that truly bring you the highest ROI.

Currently, call metrics is only available to a limited number of US advertisers. We plan to make the feature available to more advertisers in the coming months. To find out if call metrics is available in your account and to learn more about the feature, visit Google Ad Innovations.

Additionally, if you want to see call metrics in action, watch the video above.

[Inside AdSense] AdSense in Your City is coming to Seattle

Over the summer, we traveled to five cities across the US for our AdSense in Your City program. The first round of roadshows got great reviews from attendees, so we wanted to extend the program to meet more of you and provide publishers in a different part of the country with personalized optimization tips.

On Wednesday, November 10, we'll be in Seattle for our fall AdSense in Your City adventure. A few of our optimizers will be in town to hold 20-minute optimization sessions at a local coffee shop between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. We're going to keep it casual this time around, so we can provide one-on-one consultations to as many of you as possible.

We'd love to meet you, so please fill out this form if you'll be in the Seattle area on November 10 and would like to schedule an appointment with our team. Once we get your RSVP, we'll follow up via email with additional details if there's still room. Scheduling will be done on a first-come, first-served basis, but we'll do our best to include as many of you as space will allow.

See you in Seattle!

[Inside AdWords] YouTube Promoted Videos serves its 500,000,000th video view

YouTube served its 500,000,000th Promoted Video view this week. Using Promoted Videos (available in your AdWords account), businesses can promote a video against search results on YouTube. But Promoted Videos offers a discovery component as well, allowing advertiser's messages to be promoted against related content (BBQ grills shown against recipes for hamburgers) that someone may be viewing as they browse videos on YouTube. For more information on new product enhancements, please see the full story on the YouTube blog.

[Inside AdSense] Western Union now in Thailand

After launching in four African countries earlier this month, we're excited to announce the arrival of Western Union Quick Cash® payments for Thailand!

For those of you who are not familiar with this form of payment, Western Union Quick Cash payments are free of charge and will reach you faster than checks. Payments will continue to follow our normal payment schedule and will be available for pickup in your local currency at your local Western Union agent the day after they're issued.

A couple of things to note: We can send Western Union payments only to publishers that have an individual account at this time. Also, the payee name on your account must exactly match the government-issued ID card that you'll use when picking up your payments. For more information on how to sign up for and pick up Western Union payments, please visit our Help Center.

[Inside AdSense] Make the most of your AdSense experience with our new checklist

Starting a new program can be overwhelming. What steps should you take to get off on the right foot and make the most of your account? To help you make your way with AdSense, we're delighted to introduce the AdSense Checklist to publishers viewing our U.S. Help Center.

If your language preference is set to U.S. English, you'll find the checklist in the left navigation bar of the Help Center. You can recognize it by the progress bar. The checklist is divided into five parts, offering basic recommendations, required steps, and tips to help you grow your account to its full potential.

When you check an item, you'll see the progress bar update accordingly. This will help you in several ways. If you're new to AdSense, you'll get a clear overview of what steps to follow to make the most of your account. If you're already an experienced AdSense publisher, you'll also have the chance to revisit the basics, and further develop your use of the program.

The progress bar can help you identify quickly how many of the recommended steps you've completed, and the checklist will suggest which step you can take next.

We hope that this Help Center feature will be useful to you and help you grow with the AdSense program! If you have other great ideas for ways to help newbies get started with AdSense or thoughts on how to make the checklist even better, join the conversation in our forum.

AdSense for Feeds

AdSense for Feeds

Your stats, right away

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 12:54 PM PDT

Do you hate delays? Do you think being told to "Please wait…" by websites, cash machines, call centers, and the doughnut stand drive-thru guy in the year 2010 is a sure sign modern living isn't quite meeting our collective expectations as a planet?

Good news! Today, we will be rolling out a new, experimental interface for Google FeedBurner. The real story is what's new under the hood, however: the new interface provides real time stats for clicks, views, and podcast downloads, which means you can start seeing what content is drawing traffic from feed readers, Twitter, and other syndicated sources as it happens.

Additionally, if you use the FeedBurner Socialize service, and your platform uses PubSubHubbub or you ping us when you post, you can for the first time get stats on how much traffic your feed items are receiving from Twitter, as well as feed reading platforms like Google Reader in one place. Again, all within seconds of posting your content. Ping? Pong! Yep. That fast.

Your subscriber and reach numbers are still calculated based on a whole day's worth of requests, and are based on the traffic you received yesterday and before; but your item stats reflect the traffic you are receiving right now.

You can access the new interface by visiting http://feedburner.google.com/gfb/ or logging into feedburner.google.com and then clicking on the "Try out the NEW (beta) version!" link at the top.

The best way to see these real time features is to publish a new post and then switch to the "Last two hours" view to begin seeing updates.

To access feed management or previous analytics functionality, you can continue using the original interface at feedburner.google.com.

In the new interface, we are focusing on two things: our new real-time stats presentation and getting messages about and issues with your feed posted to the top-level dashboard, so that you can better diagnose any issues that may prevent your feed from being delivered in real time. If you have any comments or questions, look for the "Send Feedback" link at the top of the page to tell us what you think.

[Inside AdSense] ‘Tis the season for placement targeting: Display advertising

Over the past several weeks, we've given you tips about how to take advantage of placement targeting as advertiser spend increases during the holiday season. In this final post of our "'Tis the season for placement targeting" series, we'll take a step back to talk about a popular topic that's generated buzz around Google and the online advertising industry: display advertising. This is especially relevant to this series, as the goal of placement targeting is to offer premium space to advertisers so they can effectively reach their audiences. And these days, when you're talking about premium space, you're usually talking about space that's devoted to display ads.

Advertising on Google started out with four lines of text. In addition to the original text ads, you're probably familiar with the image, video, and rich media ads we now offer. Did you know that, other than ads shown with search results, more than 40 percent of the ads that we show are now non-text ads? More and more advertisers are creating display ad campaigns as an interactive and engaging means to reach users. To take full advantage of these ads, refer to our last post on enabling ad units to show text and image ads.

Display advertising is a big area of focus for Google. We believe that the new technology we're developing to make display advertising work better will help to grow the display advertising pie for all publishers, by orders of magnitude. We shouldn't be asking how publishers can make another 5 or 10 percent out of display advertising in the next few years. We should be looking at how the industry can double or triple in size.

To learn more about Google's position on display advertising and the steps we're taking to push the thinking to the next level, read our recent blog post on the Official Google Blog.

This wraps up our "'Tis the Season for placement targeting" series. We hope you learned a bit more about the impact of placement targeting and how you can take advantage of this feature to earn more from your online content

[Inside AdWords] The Bid Simulator reaches a new level

A few weeks ago, we announced the launch of Estimated Top Impressions in the bid simulator. Today we're announcing another improvement: the ability to view bid simulations across keywords in an ad group at once. With this launch, we hope to give you a faster and more scalable way of making bidding decisions across keywords in aggregate.

The ad group level bid simulator provides
simulations for two types of changes: 1. Applying a single bid to all the keywords in the ad group. 2. Updating the ad group default bid (this only impacts those keywords that do not have their own keyword-level CPC bid and use the ad group default bid).

If you're like many advertisers and manage your bids at the keyword-level, it may be worth taking a look at ad group level bid simulations: You could be surprised to find out that, in some cases, you could have achieved similar or better results had you managed your bids by using a single ad group default Max CPC bid.

Let's take a closer look at an ad group where this is the case:

The highlighted row shows that, for the past seven days, the ad group received 339 clicks, costing a total of $182.37. Beneath this row, you can see simulations for the potential clicks, cost, and impressions that the ad group could have received had the keywords all used a single Max CPC bid.

In this case, if all keywords in the ad group had used a Max. CPC bid of $0.53, the ad group could have received an additional 49 clicks (for a total of 398) for about the same cost ($182). Thus, if clicks from all keywords in the ad group are equally valuable to the advertiser, it would make sense to set a single bid of $0.53 to all the keywords.

Note: For this type of bid simulation, look to see if the yellow dot is above the green line in the chart to the right of the table. If it is, this indicates that you may be able to get more clicks for the same cost.

If a few keywords in an ad group are especially profitable to your business (i.e. they convert at higher conversion rates or at higher values) you may choose to manage them separately by assigning keyword-level Max CPC bids. If this is the case, the bid simulator will display simulations for the remaining keywords in the ad group that use the ad group default bid. If you select a new ad group default bid, this bid will apply to all keywords in the ad group for which you haven't specified a keyword-level Max CPC.

Here are two tips to help you get the most out of the bid simulator:

1. Check out ad group level simulations to find out if using a single bid for all the keywords in the ad group could save you time and money.

2. If you view a bid simulation for a specific keyword and do not see click cost estimates, this is likely because the keyword doesn't receive enough traffic. Consider managing low traffic keywords in aggregate by using the ad group default bid for them by deleting their keyword level bids.

To see ad group level bid simulations, go to the "Ad groups" tab and look at the "Default Max. CPC" column in our chart icon.

[Inside AdSense] Avoiding accidental clicks Pt. 2: Use the right Product

We hope you found our last post on invalid clicks useful. Today we wanted to give you more advice on this topic and talk about ads on pages containing interactive media, such as videos and games.

We understand that video content pages aren't as easy to monetize as regular text-based pages and that publishers are interested in experimenting with different ad placements, but we'd likely clarify some of our policies addressing AdSense for content ads in interactive media environments:
  • We don't allow publishers to overlay AdSense for content ads on video content.
  • We don't allow publishers to implement AdSense for content ads as in-stream video placements.
  • We don't allow publishers to implement AdSense for content ads on interstitial pages. So if a user has decided to watch a video, you may not implement ads on pages saying "your video will start in 15 seconds." We've also seen this placement on Flash gaming sites in the form of an ad being shown to the user while the game is loading in the background. However, even if you allow users to skip these ads or close them, this placement is not allowed.
Now for the good news: If you are interested in monetizing overlay or in-stream placements on your video content, please check out AdSense for video. Similarly, if you are interested in placing ads on interstitial pages on your Flash gaming sites, read about AdSense for games. The key difference between using these products and AdSense for content is that with AdSense for games and AdSense for video, we only show ads from a pool of advertisers who specifically target these kinds of placements and have optimized their campaigns and creatives towards them.

Think about your users and advertisers when implementing AdSense ads on your sites. Make sure that ads are separated enough from the content to prevent accidental clicks, and that ads are always recognizable as such. Remember that AdSense is an ecosystem that will continue to thrive as long as all parties remain happy within it. Users are happy to see relevant and useful ads that are not obtrusive or misleading, advertisers are happy to reach their target audience and get good returns on their investment, and you - the publisher - will be happy to have an AdSense account in good standing.

[Inside AdSense] ‘Tis the Season for Placement Targeting: Optimize Your Ad Units

Last week, we discussed DoubleClick Ad Planner, a media planning tool to help you improve your placement targeting. Now that you've made your website visible to advertisers with Ad Planner and ad placements, we want to help you ensure that your ad units are also visible to advertisers and ready to be targeted. Here's how to take advantage of advertiser spend with your ad units:

1. Implement your ad units above the fold and near your content, where users are already engaging with your site. "Above the fold" refers to the area on a page that a user can see without scrolling down.

2. Where possible, use top-performing ad sizes like the medium rectangle (300x250), large rectangle (336x280), leaderboard (728x90), and wide skyscraper (160x600).

3. Enable your ad units to show text and image ads, so that all relevant, available ad inventory is competing to appear on your site. Many advertiser campaigns are made up of image ads, so we highly recommend activating this feature to take full advantage.

Once you've made the changes, not only will your ad placements be ready for this holiday season, but they'll also be targetable by advertisers in future ad campaigns.

To learn more about these topics, check out our YouTube videos on image ads and high performing ad units, or read more in our Help Center.

Check back next week for more 'Tis the Season for Placement Targeting tips!
